Miller was a novelist and an author of autobiographical reminiscences, and wrote articles published in the Cleveland Jewish News. The collection consists of letters from Spain, drafts af articles relating his experiences in the Spanish Civil War, correspondence, notes, newspaper clippings and essays on the Miller family and on issues of Jewish concern. With his family, he moved in 1825 to Unionville, Lake County, Ohio. In 1852, he moved to North Madison, Lake County, Ohio. Cumings attended various schools, including the Madison Seminary and the Grand River Institute at Austinburgh. He later enrolled at Oberlin College, graduating in 1862. He then enlisted in the 105th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War, receiving a commission as a 1st Lieutenant of Company D. In 1864, he was promoted to the rank of Captain of Company A, later transferring to Company K. During the war, Cumings and the 105th Regiment saw action in the battles of Perryville, Kentucky (1862); Milton, Tennessee (1863); Hoover's Gap, Tennessee (1863); Murfreesboro, Tennessee (1863); Lookout Mountain, Tennessee (1863); Missionary Ridge, Tennessee (1863); and Atlanta, Georgia (1864). After the war, Cumings settled at Tidioute, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where he lived for the remainder of his life. In 1867, he married Charlotte (Lottie) J. Sink. Cumings was active in various oil refining companies, and also served in local political and governmental posts. The collection consists of correspondence, supply orders, military records and publications, post-war business records, personal writings, newspaper clippings, speeches, and an autograph book. The collection pertains primarily to Henry Cumings' Civil War experiences, with detailed information referring to the 105th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry and the post quartermaster department. Also included is material relating to Oberlin College during the early 1860s, letters from his wife, Lottie Sink Cumings, and personal information pertaining to Henry Cumings, his family and friends. | | | | Creator: | Healy, John | | | | Dates: | 1838-1932 | | | | Abstract: | John Healy (b. 1805) was a pioneer of Newburgh, Ohio, who operated the town's only general store and was a deacon and clerk of the Miles Avenue Church of Christ, where James A. Garfield was pastor. During the American Civil War Healy's son, John Sullivan (1842-1908), fought in the Seventh Ohio Volunteer Infantry, while his other son, Edson E. (1844-1932), worked with the United States Commissary Department. They were both captured at New Creek, West Virginia in 1864 and imprisoned at Castle Thunder in Richmond. They were released in 1865, on exchange, through the efforts of Julia Wheeler who later married John S. Healy. Edson E. Healy married Esther Taylor in 1869. Their three children were John Egbert (Bert), Bruce Zarah, and Cecil Taylor. The Healys remained in the family business until their retirement at the beginning of the twentieth century. The collection consists of family correspondence, seven letters from James A. During the American Civil War, Cox headed the Department of the Kanawha, commanded the IX Corps of the Army of Virginia, and in 1863, assumed command of the District of Ohio and of the 3rd Division, XXIII Corps. After the war, he was Governor of Ohio (1866-1867) and was President Grant's Secretary of the Interior (1869-1870). He was also president of the Wabash Railroad and was elected to Congress in 1876. He authored Military Reminiscences of the Civil War (1900). The collection consists of a bound, ribbon copy of William Cox Cochran's(1846-1936) unfinished biography of his stepfather, Major General Jacob Dolson Cox (1828-1900). | | | | Creator: | Cleveland Light Artillery Association | | | | Dates: | 1856-1922 | | | | Abstract: | The Cleveland Light Artillery Association is a Cleveland, Ohio, association of former members of the Cleveland Light Artillery. The association was formed in 1870 and was composed primarily of veterans of the Civil War. It met annually in reunion to pay tribute to one another and to honor deceased members. It disbanded in 1922. The Cleveland Light Artillery was originally organized in 1839 by 9 members of the Cleveland Grays gun squad, an independent military organization made up of young men chosen from the area's elite families. It was named the Cleveland Light Artillery in 1846, when it was detached from the Grays, and served as an independent artillery militia service until 1860, when it became part of Battery A of the 1st Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery, led by Col. James Barnett. When the Civil War broke out, the Cleveland Light Artillery did an initial 3-month tour of duty from April-July 1861, and was the first Cleveland unit to experience battle (Phillippi) in the war and the first to suffer a casualty. The collection consists of minute books of annual meetings (1870-1922), including lists of members and account records, a book of memorial tributes and biographies of deceased members, a register book of members, including newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous correspondence, invitations, acknowledgments, and locations of burials in Cleveland's Lakeview Cemetery. J.F. Beadle was an American Civil War soldier who served in the 10th Regiment of Ohio Infantry, and later, in the 18th Independent Battery of Ohio Light Artillery. After the war he settled in Plainwell, Michigan. The collection consists of correspondence, Civil War military records, a certificate designating Beadle as a notary public, copies of Bible lessons, and a receipt. The collection pertains primarily to the Civil War experiences of Beadle and his wife, Rachel Smith, and includes correspondence which reflects the effects of the war on the personal lives of the soldiers and their families. | | | | Creator: | Stamm, Morris and Eleanor | | | | Dates: | 1937-1990 | | | | Abstract: | Morris and Elanor Stamm were labor, peace, civil rights and political activists from Cleveland, Ohio. Morris Stamm emigrated from Russia and came to Cleveland in 1916, where he was a laborer for 61 years. He joined the Communist Party in 1928 and was a shopfloor organizer for the United Electrical Workers in the Cleveland area. Stamm fought as a foot soldier with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War from 1937-1938. He married Eleanor Ginsberg in 1940. In the 1970s, Morris and Eleanor led the Cleveland Committee for a Democratic Spain, and were highly involved in the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. The collection consists of correspondence between Morris Stamm and other members of the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and the Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archives. Included are letters relating to the Committee for Black Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War and the archives of the American Medical Bureau to Aid Spanish Democracy, as well as issues of Volunteer for Liberty, organ of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, and The Volunteer, organ of the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Biographical material and newspaper clippings pertaining to the Stamms are also included, together with newsletters of the Meiklejohn Civil Liberties Institute and correspondence with film makers re: film projects about the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and radicals in the early labor movements.
